Toy Talk at the PRC

Our February 1st meeting was a departure from our usual discussions, for sure. The presenter was Natalie Wardega VP and Director of Operations for Replay for Kids.  The organization provides modified toys to clients who make them available to handicapped children.  Toys are modified by volunteers. PRC members look to provide services in a session scheduled for April 4th.

Natalie Wardega, VP and Director of Operations, introduces members to her organization – Replay for Kids.

The 6 colorful piano key type switches on this toy would be difficult for many handicapped children to operate. With the sequential switch installed (shown at left) operation much easier. For children who can’t squeeze an object, the Snoopy stuffed animal talks when the user hits the pink and white dome shaped switch sitting in front. The switch is a modified battery operated closet light.

This custom-made sequential switch, designed by a volunteer, allows a handicapped child to access multiple toy functions with one button. The board is installed inside the toy.

If you’d like to participate in this very rewarding project, plan to join us on April 4th.

Our next meeting

Our meeting on February 15th will be a business meeting. We’ll be discussing our Earth Day special event operation planned for April.  The meeting will be followed by a brief presentation on the ever popular Yagi directional antenna. I’ll have a couple samples of that you could easily build.
