Special program for new hams August 7th

It’s a real pleasure to hear new hams and new members jumping in and participating on the FM net while their new call sign is still wet! With these folks in mind I thought it would be good to postpone our original program on SDR radio and instead discuss  topics that would of value to the new ham.  So at the August 7th meeting we’ll talk about: net protocol, how to use repeaters and understanding those funny sounds you hear, tips on getting the best results from your handheld and some very helpful accessories for your new handheld. In addition I encourage everyone not to hesitate to ask a question of interest. We’ll have a lot of experience in the room, so someone will be able to help you.

West Park QRP Fun Day

You should have received the email informing us of the West Park RadioOps QRP Fun Day on August 12th.  I plan to participate and try my luck with a portable HF radio.  I encourage our new hams and others to stop by and check it out even if you don’t have a portable HF station of your own to set up.  It will be a great learning experience for everyone and you get to meet a lot of good people!  I’m sure you can also give others a hand with set up and tear down. Again, part of learning about this great hobby.

Ohio QSO Party

The Ohio QSO party is being held on August 26 from 1600Z to 0400Z and your club is invited to participate! Every year many hams in Ohio participate from their home stations, as rovers or as mobiles. Their is also a category for EOC stations and multi operator stations-a great way to get together and have fun with a few friends. Our goal is to have lots of fun making all 88 Ohio counties available on the air for that 12 hour period. The OHQP is a fun way to generate activity and help county hunters get confirmation for Ohio counties.

You are receiving this email because your club is listed as an ARRL affliated radio club in Ohio.

Here’s how you and your club can help.

1) Announce the Ohio QSO party at your next club meeting and talk it up. Even getting on for an hour or two will help activity greatly.

2) Place an announcement on your web page and in your newsletter with a link to the Ohio QSO Party web page.( www.ohqp.org

3) If your club has a reflector or hangout on 2 meters announce the Ohio QSO Party and generate some interest.

Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you think may be interested in participating. Between now and the OHQP I will be available to give a brief talk about the OHQP if you’d like.

Thanks for your help in making the Ohio QSO Party for 2017 a great success!

ARRL Great Lakes Division Director, Dale R Williams, WA8EFK writes:

Greetings all,

Our Great Lakes Division Section Managers have already alerted everyone about the need to send an e-mail to their Senators in Washington to support the Amateur Radio Parity Act. This note is a friendly reminder that if you have not yet sent your e-mail, the attached link will allow you to do that with a very minimal effort. https://arrl.rallycongress.net/ ctas/urge-us-senate-to-support-amateur-radio-parity-act This is truly important that we get this passed so the FCC will be directed to create a set of guidelines implementing PRB-1-style rules that allow those hams living in areas governed by homeowners’ associations to install effective antennas. The above link is also available at the top of the ARRL Web Page. Thanks for your help and 73,

Field Day Report

It’s hard to believe that Field Day 2017 has come and gone.  But the memories will always be with us.  And to make it easy, several members took some really great photos.  Come to the Monday July 17th meeting and enjoy their photo work and a report on our operating success.

Many thanks to everyone who made 2017 Field Dad one of the best ever– and you know who you are.   See you at the meeting.

36 Days Until the Solar Eclipse QSO Party!

On Monday, Aug. 21, Americans will witness nature’s most spectacular show — a total eclipse of the sun.  What is a solar eclipse? Well, the moon orbits Earth approximately every 27 days. A solar eclipse is the cosmic coincidence when the moon passes exactly between Earth and the sun, thereby casting a shadow onto Earth and blocking our view of the sun.
Partial, total and annular eclipses can be viewed every so often depending on one’s geographic location on Earth, but next month will be the first time in 99 years that the United States will experience a coast-to-coast total solar eclipse. The path of the moon’s shadow, or where the eclipse reaches totality, will cover 14 states from Oregon to South Carolina. Unfortunately, the total (100%) solar eclipse will not be viewable in Northeast Ohio, but that doesn’t mean we will miss out on this celestial event.

Here’s a link to a most spectacular animation of the August eclipse.  https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/details.cgi?aid=4314

How will the solar eclipse effect radio communications?  We’re about to find out. Ward Silver, N0AX in the August 2017 QST (p. 94) informs us of a unique Solar Eclipse QSO Party designed to flood the airways with contacts, all measured by automated receiver networks of the Reverse Beacon Network, PSKReporter, and WSPRNet. When those observations are combined with the logs from individual stations, the result will be one of the largest ionospheric experiments ever performed. Silver’s article goes on to explain how hams can have a starring role in this great experiment.

The above was based on articles from August 2017, ARRL QST, p. 94 and  Sun Papers article by Morgan Paskert of the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center http://www.cleveland.com/faces-of-the-suns/index.ssf/2017/07/heres_how_to_make_the_most_of.html

The Eclipse 2017 site provides a load of valuable information and says “We’ll See You in the Shade”:   http://www.eclipse2017.org/2017/basics.htm

IMPORTANT: Never view the sun or a solar event directly. Paskert’s article describes how to view the sun safely.

Final prep for Field Day 2017

Our June 19th meeting will be our final opportunity to discuss Field Day plans.  We hope you’ll be able to participate this year with any or all of the event. Field Day is June 24th, 2 pm to 2 pm on the 25th at Top O’ Ledges in the Hinckley Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks. We’ll be setting up 10:00 am and can use all the help we can get.

This link will take you to a printable map to our Field Day site.

Thanks to Tom Bedoc, K8DMM for drafting some press release documents to promote Field Day to the public. I’ll have those at the meeting and we’ll need to have a volunteer to drop them off at various locations.

Do you have a little project or new goodie you’d like to show to fellow members? Bring it to the next meeting and tell us all about it.  Remember, “Creativity is the brain having fun”.

As thousands of hams roamed the recent Hamvention and admired some of the latest gear, I began to wonder when we’ll see ham equipment incorporate artificial intelligence, what the cool kids call AI.  Will we some day have transceivers that find the DX for us?  Artificial intelligence allows computers to “learn” thanks to something called algorithyms.  (If you really want to sound new age, in casual conversation you can drop “algorithyms” into the conversation.)  If you’re not familiar with the term, this clip explains the role of algorithyms in the development of driverless cars and other machines that can actually learn.     How Algorithms Are Driving Us Into the Future

Are you (getting) ready for the big event of the year?

Although ARRL’s Field Day is the major ham radio event of the year, numerous U.S. hams have yet to enjoy it.

I would suggest to anyone who hasn’t yet played radio in the field or under the stars, enjoyed great food and chat with fellow hams and their families, make 2017 your year to do it.

At our June 5th meeting we’ll make decisions as the necessary details. Please be on hand to voice your suggestions for making the event a success.

Many of us were not able to attend Hamvention 2017. If you were one of the lucky ones, I’m hoping you’ll give the rest of us an overview of your experiences at the event’s very first appearance in Zenia.

Are the bands coming back?

Tell me they are!  After our 10 meter net this week (Thursday, 9 PM 28.460) I dropped down to 40 meters and found it to be wonderfully quiet in comparison to past weeks.  I answered a CQ from a station in New Jersey and we had a very enjoyable chat for about 20 minutes. We were both running 100 watts and signals started strong and stayed  “5-9” throughout the QSO.  Later, I received a “5-9” in Minot, ND. I was using my delta loop, not the best antenna when the band is long.

“Creativity is the Brain Having Fun”

Adam Savage, host of TV’s Myth Busters

I don’t know who to give credit to for that clever quote, but l love it and will probably use it again and again because I really believe in it.  Creativity can take many forms, of course.  You know you’ve had a creative idea when you realize that if it were not for you and your imagination a problem might not have been solved, an attractive or clever creation might not exist, a disease might not have been conquered… the possibilities are endless.

If you appreciate the child-like thrill of making things, you’ve likely watched the long running TV series called  Myth Busters. As the hosts seek to debunk a popular myth, a whole lot of creativity and making stuff goes on. Adam Savage is one of the hosts and has appeared  many times as a speaker at San Francisco’s Makerfaire, an annual event for creative makers and their creations. I thought you might enjoy Savages his recent appearance Adam Savage’s Sunday Sermon at Makerfaire.
